Been told the simply way to retrieve it from tough disk is to bring laptop to experts. Probably expensive. What if anything should I try first ?

You could try a system restore to have the workstation go spinal column to a specific date.
Check that your son is telling the truth..
There are information recovery programs on download.com. Try those first and also try to do a system restore, which is lower than the Accessories, System folder.
Try the recovery way out, if u r using windows xp, it might be still save..

recuva is a freeware file seizure program, and it is easy to use
Check the recycle bin first earlier trying some other solutions just contained by case it is within.
A system restore only recover settings and programs, it has no effect on individual files (word documents, mp3's, ect...). Check the recycle bin, if they've been delete from there you hold to use a data recouping program. I would use recuva because it's the only free one from my research.
